Can you tell us a little bit about yourself (who are you, where are you from, what drives and motivates you, etc.)?
I am Joey Espinosa, a graduate of BSECE from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines - Manila. I have been exposed to the development of mobile applications for more than five years focusing on native app development for Android and iOS. The sole reason that motivates me to do my best is that I want to be better every single day.
When and how did you get started on programming?
I started to engage on programming way back in 2012. I was fortunate enough to attend a company-sponsored boot camp. I became interested in programming since then because it seemed that this job is for me and it is something where I can be at my best.
What is the programming language and/or framework of your choice? Why?
I do prefer developing for the Android platform because the majority of my work experience was exposed to that platform. I have chosen this platform due to the vast resources available.
Can you share some projects you’ve done? Which of them are you most proud of and why?
I have done a couple of projects, as well as proof-of-concept implementations for various companies. Most of these are Android applications, some of which are for education and FinTech startups. I did my best on all projects that I'm involved with so I can't think of a specific one to be most proud of.
In your work experience as a developer, what’s a frequently overlooked skill that proved surprisingly useful?
My answer to this is not more of a skill, but it's letting yourself to always be outside of your comfort zone, and always strive for improvement. I think it’s very vital for every developer to have their mindset towards their goals.
What projects/technologies do you enjoy working on in your spare time?
In my spare time, I am still focused on the Android platform. At the moment, I am currently looking at the Android Architecture Components and I have been developing some prototypes.
Walk us through your day. What’s a typical day like for you as a developer?
My typical day as a developer has been routinary. I tend to wake up early morning, even though work starts at 3:00 PM. What I do is to enrich myself --- maybe do some side projects, or watch a tutorial. What lies beyond 3:00 PM is the usual work at Cloud Employee.
What’s your favorite part of being a developer?
I think a developer in its broadest sense is being capable of making or doing something that will give you fulfillment at the end of the day, no matter how big or small your contribution had been.
Tech is an industry where the trends and requirements change quickly. How do you keep your skills up to date?
I just watch videos, or online tutorials in order for me to be updated with the features available for a particular platform.
What made you decide to work at Cloud Employee?
I think Cloud Employee is a company that will give me great opportunities.
What’s it like working at Cloud Employee so far?
The work experience is good such as having the perks of a flexible schedule like being allowed to work from home.
Bonus question:
What would be your dream developer setup, in terms of hardware and software? / What do you use to get the job done?
I would prefer a developer set up with a good space to place a 28" or 32" UHD Monitor for optimal viewing of the lines of code even at a glance. As long as I have a substantial setup for the desktop computer with SSD and at least 16 GB RAM, that will do for me.
