Routines to Control Rudeness in Remote Workplaces

In order to survive, humans have always relied on community and cooperation.

Strong alone, weak alone, and our bodies illustrate this.

Health and well-being are greatly enhanced by positive relationships.

well-being

Doing well for people in our most significant communities, including those at work, is thus in our social and biological values.

It's true that we aren't always nice to each other. Sometimes, we may even be rude.

Do you have to search for a long time before you find an instance of rudeness or incivility toward you from a colleague? Most likely not.

Although remote work has many benefits, it can also encourage rude behavior.

We're not physically on the same team, so we feel less peer pressure to act respectfully.

It's also more likely to cause miscommunication.

But now that remote working is widely accepted as a viable way to work, it's worth taking a look at rudeness in the remote setting:

What is the definition of rude behavior?

When someone violates a minimum standard of respect as determined by their community, they are rude or uncivil.

This standard may vary significantly by the community you belong to.

In Norway, for example, honking is considered very rude unless the car is in an emergency.

Drivers in Cairo honk to give thanks, disapproval, and respect.

Because of universal standards of respect in the workplace, it is a little easier to understand what rudeness means.

The vast majority of companies, whether remote or local, view these behaviors as rude:

  • Ignore a question

  • Swear

  • Shouting or yelling

  • Overhear a colleague's conversation

  • Disturb a coworker

  • Act in a harsh way

  • Make fun of a colleague

What Are the Consequences of Being Rude?

A single rude act may not do much harm. Sometimes it is hardly noticed.

However, if someone is consistently rude to you, you will face the following consequences:

  • Job satisfaction has reduced.

  • lower levels of employee satisfaction.

  • A greater chance of burnout.

  • Increased levels of stress.

Most people's instinctive reaction to rudeness is to avoid the person who is rude to them.

That isn't always possible at work. You may have no choice but to work with them at times.

When you report rudeness, you may feel as if you're making a huge deal out of something minor, so your body will be on edge all the time, especially when you're with an unpleasant person.

What Should You Do If Someone at Your Company Is Being Rude?

People are usually disrespectful to one another because their workplace culture or societal conventions restrict them from doing so.

It encourages employees to be dominating and reveal no flaws, the setting of a hypercompetitive work environment is frequently unpleasant and harsh.

In such environments, the corporation always comes first.

Make respect, empathy, and civility a core value at your remote organization to reduce rudeness.

Take none of these things for granted.

Set strong regulations that must be obeyed instead.

What Should You Do If Someone Treats You Rudely?

Assuming the other person means well is the best way to deal with rudeness.

Most people do.

Remote businesses tend to have employees all over the world.

What one person perceives as a slight may not be perceived as such by another.

Among other things, someone might interpret "You understand?" as a challenge to their intelligence, while the other might interpret it as genuinely curious.

Be open-minded and assume that people do not mean any harm.

The key is to discover common ground on which you and your partner can build a good connection.

It's an open discussion about how your colleague's actions make you feel and why improving your relationship is in your best interests.

Moreover, consider reaching out to someone you can talk to.

Ask your manager, a trusted relative, or a friend for help.

Let them know your problems.

You'll need a strong support system to keep you motivated until the rudeness stops.

Knowing that you are not alone will make you feel better about addressing your problems.
