10 Habits of Highly Successful Software Developers

With the ever-evolving state of the world, the need for software developers keeps rising. More and more people are becoming fascinated by this field. This is a good thing, but we know that it is not only about numbers. Of course, the rise in the number of software developers is good, but that should not be the only thing we look at.

People have diverse reasons for becoming software developers and may have many goals they would like to achieve. Since everyone wants to be successful, here are ten habits of highly successful software developers.

  1.   They write codes that are easy to read and test, clean, and reusable.

Writing codes may come quickly to some, while to others, it may be a difficult task. Whichever one it may be, you need to make sure that the code that you write is easy to read. When coding, be careful that you do not unknowingly overcrowd a function. Your codes should be written coherently and logically. Also, follow all the rules and employ coding techniques to make your work very easy to read and test.

As you do this, try to assign only one role to each function and clearly state the meaning and function of the variables. Most software developers spend less time coding and writing than going over their work. Therefore, it is essential that after coding for a couple of weeks, when you come back, you can easily read and understand the code that you have written.

  1. They are humble

The saying ‘pride goes before a fall’ is very common. It is sometimes true. No matter the height you attain or how great you become, you need to be humble always. This does not mean that you should allow people to walk over you. No, it only means that you should maintain the humility that you have always had. Humility is essential in all aspects of life. Being humble can get people closer to you.

If you work in a team, you need to know that you are not above anyone. You must be open to constructive criticisms, and be humble enough to learn a thing or two from your teammates.

Your teammates will also be willing to teach you if you are humble and treat everyone with respect. Eventually, this new knowledge gained will help you in your journey and make you more successful.

  1. They are disciplined

Discipline is not something to be joked with, especially if you are a software developer. You need to ensure that you are time conscious, reliable, and responsible. You must know by now that as you code, there are certain procedures that you need to follow. In as much as you may want to finish your work as quickly as possible, you should never compromise the quality of the work you do.

You need to follow all the laid down procedures and the necessary steps to do your job. You must never be in a rush to complete your task such that you make mistakes. The truth is, mistakes can cause you to start the whole process again.

It would also help if you were disciplined enough to avoid taking shortcuts, as this can cause errors and bugs in your work.

  1. They are curious

Another way to be successful in the field of software development is to be overly curious. It would help if you asked questions and always research new trends and patterns of doing things. You need to have what it takes to become a software developer

You must be ever ready to learn from the new trends how to improve on the standard of applications and software you have made, fix the bugs, and make an even better one with little to no error. This curiosity and inquisitiveness can help you learn more and get better at what you do, thereby assuring you of your success.

  1. Pay attention to detail

One thing every successful software developer does is to pay attention to detail. It would be best if you never took anything for granted, no matter how trivial it may seem. Creating software is not only about the final product you make or get. It entails all the little details from the beginning to the end.

You must, therefore, be detail-oriented and never take anything for granted. You should never fixate on only one part of the development process and make it seem like it is the most critical part of the process. Also note that all aspects of this process are equally important, and the negligence of one can cause the complete failure of the other.

The upside of paying attention to your work is that it helps you find your mistakes early in the process and allows you to correct them before you finally draw the curtain on the product.

  1. They schedule their activities properly

Planning is essential. As a software developer, planning your day to day activities is necessary. You need to have certain goals that need to be achieved either by the end of the day or the week. Also, try to stick to what is set on your itinerary and make sure you are not distracted by unimportant things that can wait for later. Also aim to be intentional about achieving all the objectives you have set.

Although this is not as easy as it may sound, you should look at the bigger picture and the satisfaction it will bring you. That should be enough motivation to keep you glued to your schedule and become successful.

  1. They are open to learning new things

As a software developer, you must know by now that this field is not static. It is dynamic and is always changing. To be very successful here, it will help if you were open to learning more. No matter how good you think you are at what you do, there are certain things that people may do better than you do.

Do not let your ego get a better part of you. You should regularly and continuously be learning on the job and research more to get more insight. Furthermore, you can attend boot camps, training, and workshops to keep your senses sharp and ready to learn new stuff. This will always make you and your craft relevant in this department.

  1. They are comfortable with leaving their comfort zone

Every day, we hear that to grow, you need to leave your comfort zone. Staying in your comfort zone makes you too relaxed and reluctant to move forward in life. To be successful for a software developer, it will also help if you’re willing to try out new things that they ordinarily would not do.

You need to move out of your safety net and get out there to learn new things and better understand what you do. That does not mean you have to go below your standards or compromise, but you should only try new things that you used to be scared of trying for fear of failing. You need to let go of all the worries and doubts you are harboring in you. That will help you break limits and boundaries and become more successful.

  1. They are persistent in solving problems

It is relatively easy to give up when working, and you encounter certain obstacles. You feel like that is the end of the road for you. Instead of giving up completely, look for ways around it to solve these issues.

There is no successful person who succeeded without having to overcome certain challenges. If you want to win at what you do and become a household name on the lips of many, you need to persevere and find ways of solving your problems rather than running away from the challenge.

You might have to fight this challenge again someday, so it would be better if you got a solution to your problems once and for all.

  1. They are good team players

No matter how good you are, you cannot always be secluded and on your own. You will need the help of others to complete certain tasks. If you work in a large company, you should know that you may be paired with others to work on a common project. Also, aim to be a good team player and work well with others.

Never feel like you are better than the others. Rather, tolerate all divergent views from others. You will be working with different people with different opinions. No matter how bad you think their opinions are, you should never be rude to them.

If you are a team leader, too, find good ways to manage and set up your team. When your team succeeds, you know that you have also succeeded.
