5 Readily Available Snacks that Boost Brain Power

Working on a desktop day in and day out can get tiring. A quick snack can help refresh your mood and keep you fuelled to work throughout the day. Instead of munching on the usual chips or confectionery, why not try snacks that will boost your brain power? Here’s a couple of our favourite readily available snacks you can easily bring to work with no hassle.   

Dark Chocolate

Brain boosting snack: Chocolate


The cocoa in chocolate is rich in flavonols, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They’re said to enhance blood flow and lower blood pressure, thus improving the blood circulation from the brain to the heart and cognitive health. However, not all chocolate have this effect. Find one that has at least 70% cocoa in it; the darker the chocolate, the better.


Brain boosting snack: Broccoli


High in compounds called glucosinolates, broccoli can help keep your memory sharp. Glucosinolates are known to delay the breakdown of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which without would impede the functionality of the central nervous system. Also high in vitamin K, broccoli is a snack that’ll increase brainpower and cognitive function.


Brain boosting snack: Eggs


A great source for protein, B vitamins and folic acid, eggs can help reduce homocysteine in the blood, which is associated with Alzheimer’s disease and stroke. Choline in the yolk is also known to increase memory and slow down cognitive impairment due to ageing. Like broccoli, the choline in yolk can help aid neurotransmitter acetylcholine thus increasing brainpower.


Brain boosting snack: Walnuts


Loaded with memory-enhancing omega-3 fatty acids and homocysteine-lowering B vitamins, walnuts are great brain food. Also packed with vitamin E, folate, melatonin and antioxidants, walnut consumption helps with cognitive and motor function. It is also known to increase inferential reasoning in young adults.


Brain boosting snack: Avocado


Avocados are filled with nutrients that improve memory and concentration. Best eaten as is, its high potassium content is known to lower blood pressure, promoting blood circulation and cognitive function. Also rich in vitamin K and folate, including it in your snack routine can reduce blood clotting and also increase blood flow, thus increasing brain power.
